Philadelphia can be a winter wonderland when we actually get enough snow that sticks!! Our city has many options for outdoor sledding that will get you off your cell phone and computer and back outside to have fun. For your convenience we have compiled a great list of places to scope out the best sledding destinations!
- The Art Museum Steps (for older kids and adults)
- Burholme Park
- Austin Meehan School
- Clark Park
- Walnut Lane Golf Course
Lots of people like to go sledding down the “hill” of the Art Museum, but that’s not a real hill, it’s a set of steps! It is not a destination for young children who cannot control their sleds though, (in fact it is downright dangerous) so we do not recommend it for young ones, but if you have that fearless gene and are up for an awesome thrill, this the place to go! Keep in mind that the steps are a great place to go sledding, as long as there is plenty of snow on them so you can be safe. While it may take a lot of energy to walk all the way to the top of the steps, it will be worth it to have a blast each time you fly down to the bottom! The Art Museum is located at 26th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia. Pa. 19130, and is an easy walk for anyone who lives in center city.
Burholme Park is special because it is home to one enormous hill, which has been attracting those who love to sled for many years. It will be great, but it will also be packed! So if you are into being a part of a busy scene with many others who also love to sled, then this is your destination! Burholme Park is located in the Fox Chase section of the city, 401 Cottman Avenue Philadelphia, Pa. 19111.
The Austin Meehan School has a very steep hill, which is rare for Philadelphia. The straight-down angle attracts the most daring of sled experts from all over the city. If you a thrill seeker and like super fast downhill rides, then this school’s property is the right place for you to sled! Austin Meehan Middle School, is located in Northeast Philadelphia, near Lincoln High School, 3001 Ryan Avenue Philadelphia, Pa. 19152.
Clark Park is the perfect place for a novice, or a sledding family. It has a gentler slope and is formed like a bowl- so it is exceptional for safe sledding that keeps you contained in the park, and not on a street. This is our top pick for kid friendly sledding in Philadelphia, so if you are new to sledding or are taking someone who is, this is the right spot for you. Clark Park is located on Baltimore Avenue between 43rd and 45th Streets in University City, Philadelphia, Pa. 19104
Walnut Lane Golf Course is a very unique place to go sledding. How many people can say they have sled on a golf course? Well if you haven’t been, the rolling hills and slopes of Walnut Lane make it a great experience! It’s a lot of fun because it offers a combination of smaller hills and larger slopes as well. If variety is what you are looking for, this is the place to take your sled! The Walnut Lane Golf Course is located in the Roxborough/Manayunk section of the city on Walnut Lane Philadelphia, Pa. 19128.
