Rob Capone
Chemical Engineer, Restaurant Manager, Ice Sculptor…these may all sound a little unrelated, but for Rob Capone this is the life he has lived. He graduated from Villanova with a degree in Chemical Engineering and while studying at Villanova, he had the opportunity to work with one of the world’s top sculptors. In the beginning, Rob had no background in art or sculpting but helping his friend he learned fast and became quite good at it, and it became a natural fit for him.
Capone has now been sculpting for over 6 years and started this career while he was between jobs. He was managing a restaurant but found that ice sculpting was much more exciting and fulfilling than the daily stresses and long hours of the restaurant life. Rob really enjoys the rewarding nature of the job and the idea that people think it’s cool for him to turn something so generic into something so extravagant. He also stated “Project requests are constantly changing and the more custom artwork people want the more challenging it becomes for me.”
One of the largest pieces Capone has ever sculpted was about 15 ft tall, contained 40 blocks of ice, and weighed about 300 lbs. This was during the Winter Festival that was hosted in Vail, Colorado. Another event that Capone really enjoyed was the Philadelphia vs Boston Ice Show that was held in Boston. Capone had the opportunity to do what he loved in front of 45,000 people. He said that this was a very rewarding experience and confirmed his love of this unique skill.
The Morris House Hotel and M Restaurant were lucky enough to have Rob come and sculpt for our First Annual Tree Lighting Event that was held on December 1. Rob sculpted Philadelphia’s LOVE park logo at the event and also a full sized Nutcracker to help bring in the holiday season.
